This must stop.
A vote to give the Superintendent an additional year of severance, when all we’ve seen in her tenure is declining scores and performance across the county, is nothing short of corrupt. I don’t use that word lightly. When resources are finite, when families of special education students are begging for help, when students are in therapy and suffering because they’re shut out of school - this board is busy lining the pockets of their political allies and friends.
With experience managing budgets in excess of $36B, I bring the expertise to manage your hard earned tax dollars wisely. My opponent has shown zero budgetary discipline, and she wastes the valuable resources our teachers and students need for their educational success.
Did you know - 88% of the entire budget is dedicated to teacher and admin salary and benefits? With a razor thin, 12% margin, we need leaders who exercise budgetary discipline and have expertise in making every dollar count. Wake families deserve better from our school board in District 8.
YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO ... It's time that District 8 voters understand the importance of voting for a better School Board.
Listening to these parents' stories about Cameron Pond's reassignment - their lack of answers even 2+ years later, the lack of empathy by the school board and the current District 8 rep, the way it affected families in their little neighborhood - I hope it it makes us think twice about re-electing a school board who shows a pattern of ignoring parents' voices.
It is time to elect principled leaders to Wake County BOE. I will not re-assign established neighborhoods. Families move to here, in part, for the promise of good schools. If we don't reverse these trends, families will start moving out instead of moving in.
Steve Bergstrom. School Board. District8.
My opponent and this school board have reassigned schools for years now - for no conceivable reason. Established neighborhoods have been uprooted, relationships damaged, and even to his day entire neighborhoods can't get an answer as to WHY they were reassigned ... the data and facts don't support it. These groups of parents spoke with me about their reassignment stories. Just 2 of many. Their message? - Change the school board of this will continue to happen to neighborhoods across Wake County and District 8.
I’ll save you the hour+ !! … Here’s the time stamps to what I feel are the best parts of the video (no bias)!
5:55 – District 8 incumbent introduces herself and touts her education background – What she won’t make known is that her background in teaching comes courtesy of 12 years at a $50K/year private school. For a school board who consistently demonizes the efforts of private schools to re-open for all students this year, I find this fact troubling.
6:19 - District 8 incumbent recommends re-election of the entire school board because they form a “strong team”. This is the same team who has voted 9-0 on nearly every decision for the last 3 years. Have you ever seen an effective team that has little to no diversity of thought?
6:27 – My intro and explanation of qualities I’ll bring to the Board
9:10 - QUESTION 1 ANSWER – SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORT AND FUNDING
23:33 – QUESTION 2 ANSWER – REASSIGNMENT
28:30 – Bill Fletcher talks about re-assignments being necessary to avoid over-crowding. Bill …. you and my opponent reassigned multiple neighborhoods on the basis of “student cap relief”. Every one of those reassigned schools are still over-capped. See Wakereassignment.com or any of the 2 parent videos on my site.
29:55 – My opponent attempts an apology for hurtful things she said to parents re: re-assignment.
She then shifts blame for adverse consequences from re-assignment on others.
37:30 – QUESTION 3 ANSWER – HOW WILL WE ALLOCATE TIME FOR BOE … I PIVOT TO A DISCUSSION ABOUT PERFORMANCE
53:40 – QUESTION 4 ANSWER – DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
1:03:00 – QUESTION 5 ANSWER – MATH
1:23:00 – MY CLOSING STATEMENTS
Sorry for not including many time stamps for my opponent – there just was not much content to mention.
My response to the School Boards decision to abdicate their leveraging position on reopening plans. They decided against advocating for parents and children in Wake County that want a choice in reopening.
Parents deserve a choice - not a one size fits all plan. Keeping schools closed (despite the counsel of CDC, AAP and epidemiologists and physicians) hurts the most vulnerable - single parents, low-income families, children on IEPs and 504 plans, those on meal plans, children with learning disabilities, etc. Let’s give them a choice! Vote Steve Bergstrom Wake County School Board District 8.
As school is about to start, many are left wondering WHY ... why didn't the leaders we elected give people a choice? Why didn't they plan, prepare, and do all they could? Because my opponent and this school board continue to act FOR us, rather than act WITH us. One-size-fits-all plans don't work. Wake County Public Schools deserve better. Vote Steve Bergstrom Wake County School Board District 8.
